HERCUTEC n-Pentane (C₅H₁₂)

The isomer n-pentane has the same molecular formula as isopentane (C₅H₁₂) and also belongs to the alkanes. Among our three pentanes, it is the linear representative of the three structural isomers. Under normal pressure, the boiling point of n-pentane is 36 °C. It is highly flammable, so proper handling is imperative.

The colorless liquid is hardly soluble in water (39 mg/l at 20 °C), but it is soluble in most organic solvents. In practice, n-pentane is used primarily as a CFC-free refrigerant and as a solvent for foaming rigid polyurethane foams, phenolic resin and polystyrene.
